Regarding the Standard report:
Selecting Test Instances > Execution Report, and leaving it at that gives you access only to the information available at the Test Instance level. That would be the information you see in the Execution Grid in the Test Lab.
To get to the executed steps you have to add the subreport Runs, and then the subreport for that - Run Steps. At the Run Steps subreport level you have access to the Step information.
Regarding your "Report Status isn't ready" message:
If you plugged the query into an Excel Report in the Dashboard, then initially the Status of the Excel report is "Not Ready" and you get that message when you try to generate it. Click on the Generation Settings tab to access the Status field of the Excel report and change it to Ready.
