Exactly how are you determining that there is no workflow code related to this field?
Looking at my own ALM 11.0 system, I don't see a System Field named "BG_ESTIMATED_FIX_DAYS" in the Defect entity. Are you sure you have the right field name? Could this be a User Defined field instead? If it is, it would have a name like "BG_USER_##".
I did find a System Field for "BG_ESTIMATED_FIX_TIME".
